We are looking for a Manager, Business Incident Management Planning


The Manager, Business Incident Management (BIM) Planning will support the Director, Business Incident Management in establishing and overseeing the enterprise incident management, crisis management, and emergency response processes for the Canada Life organization.


This first line of defence role will assist in and/or lead the development of plans, playbooks, and program documentation to support Canada Life’s BIM function. The successful candidate will draw upon extensive training, education, and subject matter expertise to develop high-quality materials used as the foundation for effective incident management activities across existing Canadian business units, support and oversight functions.


They will have strong leadership and facilitation skills, and a proven ability to liaise with a broad range of stakeholders to gain buy-in and successfully develop enterprise-level plans, processes and frameworks. Expert verbal and written communication, along with advanced presentation skills are critical to this role. Additionally, advanced time management and problem-solving skills are required for the successful completion of all activities.


What you will do


  • On-call 7x24 to support the Director during incident response activities.
  • Serve as alternate Response Facilitator, leading, or coordinating meetings of the Incident Management Teams as required.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert during incidents and emergencies, working to align response processes to documented plans, playbooks, and processes.


Planning and Documentation

  • Lead the development of incident management plans, playbooks, and processes.
  • Support the development of Post-Incident and Post-Exercise Reviews, including oversight and implementation of recommendations for improvement as required.
  • Maintain and update program plans, and documentation as required.


Training and Exercises

  • Support annual training and awareness activities for stakeholders with roles and responsibilities related to incident management.
  • Support or lead the design, development, and delivery of exercise activities to internal audiences including Site and Regional Incident Management Teams.


Program Management

  • Coordinate quarterly reporting and governance of program activities and assist in the management of any additional reporting requirements as needed.
  • Represent the program to internal and external audiences including senior leaders, regulators, and industry peers through completion and delivery of reports and presentations.
  • Engage with second line of defence Business Continuity Management teams to support global or regional initiatives when needed.


What you will bring 

  • Post-secondary degree (Master’s preferred) in disaster and emergency management or a related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • 6-8 years experience in developing incident, emergency or crisis management plans, playbooks, and processes
  • 6-8 years of experience participating in the response to incidents and emergencies in large, complex organizations
  • 6-8 years experience designing, delivering, and evaluating incident, emergency, or crisis management exercises
  • Training and certification related to recognized incident management systems (Incident Command System, Bronze-Silver-Gold, or equivalent)
  • Certification related to emergency management or business continuity preferred (AEM, CEM, CBCP, CBCI)
  • Proven ability to manage crisis situations and work under high-stress conditions
  • Ability to influence others at all levels of an organization with proven advanced leadership skills
  • Possess expert communication skills, both written and verbal, including writing executive level communications and reports
  • Strong organizational, planning and program/project management skills.
  • Adaptable to work independently amid changing requirements and direction in a fast-moving environment
  • Relevant experience in banking and/or financial industry would be considered an asset
